Holden Brown

I’m Holden Brown, an artist and documentary filmmaker whose work explores human connection through art, memory, and presence. My practice spans a wide range of mediums including ceramics, painting, poetry, drawing, photography, video, production, sewing, and knitting. I approach creation as a creative individual rather than being confined to a single discipline, allowing each idea to take the form it naturally calls for. I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, where I began developing my interest in visual storytelling and the relationship between identity and representation. I am currently completing my Master’s degree in documentary production at Indiana University, where my work has become increasingly focused on experimental forms and personal narrative structures.

My practice exists at the intersection of documentary and art. I am less interested in traditional, polished narratives and more drawn to work that feels immediate, work that acknowledges the presence of both the subject and the creator. Across mediums, I aim to create pieces that foster connection between subject and viewer, and between the viewer and themselves.

Much of my recent work explores how connection is formed, remembered, and expressed. Through projects centered on intimate storytelling and personal experience, I examine how people relate to one another and to their own sense of self. These works often strip away excess context, including faces, environments, and linear timelines, in order to focus attention on what is most essential.

This website functions as both a portfolio and an evolving record of that process. It is not meant to present a finished version of myself or my work, but rather to document an ongoing exploration shaped by experimentation, repetition, and a commitment to honesty over perfection.

Ultimately, my goal is not just to create work that is seen, but work that creates a sense of connection, something that lingers even after the moment has passed.
